Metabolite Identification
Common NameDopaquinone
DescriptionDopaquinone belongs to the class of organic compounds known as l-alpha-amino acids. These are alpha amino acids which have the L-configuration of the alpha-carbon atom. Dopaquinone is possibly soluble (in water) and a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Dopaquinone exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Dopaquinone can be biosynthesized from L-dopa through the action of the enzyme tyrosinase. In cattle, dopaquinone is involved in the metabolic pathway called the tyrosine metabolism pathway.

General function:
Involved in copper ion binding
Specific function:
This is a copper-containing oxidase that functions in the formation of pigments such as melanins and other polyphenolic compounds. Catalyzes the initial and rate limiting step in the cascade of reactions leading to melanin production from tyrosine. In addition to hydroxylating tyrosine to DOPA (3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine), also catalyzes the oxidation of DOPA to DOPA-quinone, and possibly the oxidation of DHI (5,6-dihydroxyindole) to indole-5,6 quinone.
