Metabolite Identification
Common NameUroporphyrin I
DescriptionUroporphyrin I belongs to the class of organic compounds known as porphyrins. Porphyrins are compounds containing a fundamental skeleton of four pyrrole nuclei united through the alpha-positions by four methine groups to form a macrocyclic structure. Uroporphyrin I is possibly soluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Uroporphyrin I exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans. In cattle, uroporphyrin i is involved in the metabolic pathway called the porphyrin metabolism pathway. Uroporphyrin I is a potentially toxic compound.
