DescriptionBilirubin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as bilirubins. These are organic compounds containing a dicarboxylic acyclic tetrapyrrole derivative. Bilirubin is possibly soluble (in water) and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Bilirubin exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In cattle, bilirubin is involved in the metabolic pathway called the porphyrin metabolism pathway. Bilirubin is a potentially toxic compound.
